Copper Mill Students and Staff Honored for Patriotism



Friday, Congressman Bill Cassidy (R-Baton Rouge) made remarks and presented letters of recognition to Copper Mill Elementary Principal Dewey Davis and the students and staff for their continuing contributions to the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

For three years, Copper Mill Elementary and Chapter 177 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart have worked together to benefit veterans injured in the line of duty, educate students on patriotism and service, and honor the sacrifice of the men and women of America’s Armed Services. Copper Mill Elementary has held fundraising campaigns for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, including marketing CDs of its students singing the National Anthem, and members of Chapter 177 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart have shared their time and energy to educate Copper Mill students.

Kindergarten and PreKindergarten Round Up

Kindergarten Round-Up will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Pre-Kindergarten Round-Up will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Northwestern Elementary School at 9 a.m.

Prospective Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by September 30, 2009.

Prospective Pre-Kindergarten Students must be 4 years old by September 30, 2009.

Requirements for Registration for Pre-K & K Students:
Copy of Birth Certificate and Social Security Card
Copy of Immunization Record
Four Proofs of Residency containing Parent / Legal Guardian’s Name and Address:
Original mortgage or original lease agreement / rental contract on company letterhead
Utility bill (City of Zachary- gas / water bill)
And at least 2 of the following:
Entergy or Demco bill
Telephone bill
Tax Assessor’s bill
Original, current Medical / Medicare or social security insurance card
Cable TV / Satellite bill
Original Homestead Exemption

Pre-Kindergarten
• Spaces are limited and applications will be processed on a first come first served basis.
• Families who wish to apply for the LA-4 Pre-Kindergarten program must provide proof of family income for an application to be considered. There is a $45.00 supply fee.
• Families who wish to apply for the tuition Pre-Kindergarten program will be required to submit a non-refundable $50.00 deposit to secure a slot and to cover supply fee. Tuition will be $300.00 per month. It does not include breakfast or lunch but will cover all field trips, transportation to all field trips, and a class field trip tee shirt.

Kindergarten students have a $45.00 supply fee.

JROTC Academic Team advances in in Challenge


The Zachary High School JROTC Academic Team has qualified for advancement to level II of The JROTC National Academic Challenge Competition. The team members are: Ashton Gauff, Karlie Haggard, Alexis Dawson, Felecia Dunford and Rachel White.

Only 22 teams out of 65 teams that competed in Louisiana advanced. This is the first year the Zachary Team has qualified.

Each year The College Options Foundation sponsors a nationally recognized JROTC Academic Challenge created exclusively for Army, Navy, and Air Force JROTC Cadets. The questions range from general core subjects, as one would expect to see on the ACT and SAT, to current events. There are three levels. Teams have to qualify through demonstrated performance on an online test supervised by their JROTC instructor to advance to the next level. Advancement to the third and final level includes an all expenses paid trip to Washington, DC. In addition there will be up to $50,000 in scholarships and prizes presented to the winners of the national level competition.

New Football Coach Approved


The Zachary Community School Board approved the recommendations of a search committee for a new Zachary High School Head Football Coach Wednesday tapping a former Central Assistant Coach for the job. Coach Neil Weiner will take over for the Broncos this season. He was welcomed by the Board, Interim Zachary High Principal Donald Thomas and Superintendent Drake during the Wednesday Board Meeting.

Soccer Team Honored




The Lady Broncos Soccer Team was honored at the February 11 Regular meeting of the Zachary School Board for their historic District Championship Season. The team brough home the school's first Soccer District Championship ever. Coaches Keavin Tanner and Paul Owen were on hand along with the team. Congratulations on an outstanding season!
