The Zachary Community School Board welcomes new District 7 representative Carl Kelley. Mr. Kelley was sworn in by Judge Richard "Chip" Moore at the January 10 board meeting. Kelley takes the place of Beth Kimmell who resigned from the Board in December.

Northwestern Elementary School Parent Amanda Beard made a generous donation of books to Mrs. Morgan's class so that the students could have their own Accelerated Reader library within the class. Beard also donated her time reading to the class

The Zachary High baseball team presented former player Robert Flowers with an honorary state championship ring. Flowers, a promising baseball player at Zachary High in the mid-1980s was paralyzed by an injury he received sliding head first into a base while in high school. Flowers was an inspiration to both players and coaches when the Bronco baseball team traveled to Monroe to compete against Shaw High School for the state championship at University of Louisiana Monroe where he is employed as a social worker. Coaches Jesse Cassard, Josh Corman and Zachary Community Schools Superintendent Warren Drake will present Flowers with the ring for his support and motivation of the 2007 State Champion Baseball Team.

Superintendent Warren Drake and ZCSB officials toured Louisiana Technical College and enjoyed a meal prepared by Zachary Pre-GED Skills Options students. In an effort to serve the needs of all the district's students, the school system has entered into a partnership with Louisiana Technical College-Baton Rouge to provide job specific training to students not planning to earn a traditional high school diploma. The students receive career training in the morning in the areas of graphic communications, business welding, and the care and development of young children. They return to Zachary High School in the afternoon for academic offerings designed to help prepare them for the GED.

Zachary Community School students Zachary Community Schools students Luke Lowery and Eccles James participated in the Governor's Mansion Christmas Ornament painting. Each school district in the state is represented by two students who paint the ornaments for the tree at the mansion.

Superintendent Warren Drake was presented with the Louisiana Distinguished Civilian Medal for "exceptional meritorious service as a Patriotic Employer," in a surprise ceremony at the September 13 regular meeting of the Zachary Community School Board. Drake was nominated by Capt. Patrick Jenkins for the honor. According to the recommendation, "Mr. Drake provided generous and outstanding support to the LA Army National Guard during Hurricane Katrina and Rita as well as Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mr. Drake's generous support of the LA Army National Guard and it's "citizen Soldiers" helped to enhance the morale of Soldiers serving their country and greatly enhanced the effectiveness of our efforts in fighting the Global War on Terrorism. It is a community leader such as Mr. Drake that will be a keystone in the ensuring viability of the all-volunteer force. Mr. Drake's loyalty and devotion to the 769th Engineering battalion reflects great credit upon himself, the city of Zachary, and the state of Louisiana." Among his other achievements noted in the recommendation, was his role in a Hail and Farewell Program to recognize Capt. Jenkins' deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mr. Drake celebrated and emphasize his support for the military and his employee on both television and in print media."
