Zachary Community School Board Minutes

November 20, 2003

7:00 PM

 

Members Present:  Mr. Davis, Mrs. Horton, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Kimmell, Mr. Moore, Mr. Snowden, Mrs. Womack, Mrs. Young and Mr. Drake.

 

Also Present:  Stacey Naquin, Board Attorney, Connie Aslin, Board Secretary, Donald Thomas, Personnel Director, Gordon Robertson, Business Manager, Patricia Hosemann, Food Service, Aeneid Mason, Student Support Services and Michelle Clayton, Director of Accountability and Testing.

 

The Regular Meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on November 20, 2003 at 4700 Main Street.

 

The Invocation was given by Ms. Terry Womack

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Drake White, student at Zachary Elementary.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES FOR NOVEMBER 6, 2003

Mrs. Young made the motion to approve the minutes of November 6, 2003 and Mr. Johnson seconded the motion.

VOTE:   8 YEAS   0 NAYS    1 Absent

 

PUBLIC COMMENT

Mr. Moore asked for public comment and Mrs. Carolyn Bellard thanked Ms.Welch, 4th Grade Teacher, and Dewey Davis, Principal of Zachary Elementary, for doing such a great job.

 

Mr. Carl Snowden introduced Mr. Body White, Representative for the 64th District.  Mr. White told the board that we have a great school system and to keep up the good work.

 

NORTHWESTERN MIDDLE SCHOOL AUDITORIUM FUND RAISER

Melvin Riley reported on the fund raiser for the Northwestern Middle School Auditorium.  He told the board that so far they have collected $3,700.00 in pledges. Mr. Drake thanked Mr. Riley and his committee for all of their work that they have done.

 

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Mr. Drake called Drake White to the front and Mark Johnson presented Drake with a certificate and told him that the school board was proud of him for being chosen to go to the Governors Mansion to make a Christmas Ornament.  Mr. Drake showed pictures of Drake and his ornament at the Governors Mansion.

 

Mr. Drake reported that Ryan Southall, student of Zachary High School, was the recipient of the Optimist Club Scholarship for East Baton Rouge Parish. Lori Miller, employee of Zachary Community School Board, has been elected President-Elect of Louisiana School Psychological Association. Adonica Duggan, Cathy Black and Joe Rush are being trained at a technology school in Cleveland, Ohio. Tammy Wood received a grant for $1308.00 for Enrichment through the Arts.  Mr. Davis Rayborn, Welding Teacher at Zachary High School, was named Welding Teacher of the Year and is now in the National Competition for Teacher of the Year. Connie Gillman, Math Teacher at Zachary High, has been selected Teacher of the Week by the Zachary Plainsman.

 

APPROVAL OF EMPLOYEES

Mr. Drake asked the board for approval to hire Sherry Cavin as Special Ed Instructional Support Specialist, and Mona McGilvray as Special Ed Aide, Northwestern Middle.  Mrs. Kimmell made the motion to hire these employees and Mr. Johnson seconded the motion.

VOTE:  8 YEAS  0 NAYS  1 ABSENT

 

APPROVAL OF PUPIL PROGRESSION PLAN

Ms. Mason spoke to the board about the Pupil Progression Plan and asked the board for approval.  Mrs. Kimmell made the motion to approve the Pupil Progression Plan as presented to the board and Mrs. Horton seconded the motion.  Mr. Moore asked for a Roll Call Vote.

ROLL CALL VOTE:  Mrs. Young, Mrs. Kimmell, Mr. Moore, Mr. Snowden, Mr. Davis, Mrs. Horton and Mrs. Womack – YEAS

Mr. Johnson – NAYS   1 ABSENT

 

APPROVAL OF POLICIES

Mr. Drake told the board that Michelle Clayton and Mr. Prescott met on the Testing Policy-File ll and it is ready to vote on.  Mrs. Young made the motion to approve the Testing Policy and Mr. Snowden seconded the motion. 

VOTE:  8 YEAS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT
