Zachary School Board Minutes

May 11, 2006

 

The regular meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on May 11, 2006 at 4700 Main Street, Zachary.

The invocation was led by Louise Horton and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jonathan Benda.

 

ROLL: Mr. Dayton, Mrs. Young, Mr. Swilley, Mrs. Kimmell, Mr. Snowden, Mr. Owen, Mr. Benda, Mrs. Horton and Mrs. Coleman.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Mrs. Horton moved to approve the minutes for April 27, 2006 and Mr. Benda seconded the motion. 

VOTE: 9 YEAS, 0 NAYS

 

PUBLIC COMMENT: None

 

RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED EMPLOYEE

Mr. Drake recognized Margaret Altazin, Guidance Counselor at NWM, for achieving National Board Certification. 

 

RECOGNITION OF PTO AND FAZE VOLUNTEERS

Beth Kimmell recognized PTO Presidents Tammy Wesley, NWE; Teresa Steele, ZES; Jannie Rogers, NWM and Lucy Mashburn, ZHS for their work during the 2005-2006 school year.

Lynda Coleman recognized FAZE President, Lisa Rioux and founding member and officer, Laura Steen for their work with the Foundation Assisting Zachary Education since 1972.

 

RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS

Carl Snowden presented certificates to NWE and ZES Capital Area Reading Council First Place winners  Anna Beth Charlet, Kristen Bastin, Baylie Odom, Bailey Cranford, Emily Claeboe and Maresa Watson.

 

Louise Horton presented certificates to EBR Area Reading Council winners Layne Shelton, Emily Flanders, Hannah Melonson and Joyner Davis.

 

Jon Benda presented certificates to American Spirit Poster Contest winners Kyla D’Arensbourg and Brian Dubee.

Scott Swilley presented certificates to American Spirit Poster Contest winners from Zachary Elementary; Benjamin Altazan, Aaron Barr, Kylie Bozeman, Kristina Bynum, Hunter Chidester, Cade Ewing, Savannah Guidry, Katie Haggard, Jamie Hewitt, Kurt Higgins, Alexis Lathers, Jacob McCall, Nick Neofotistos, Evan Tidwell, Christian Wilson, Kyle Wilson and Derek Wooden.  

 

Gaynell Young presented a certificate to Channel 1 Network National Competition winner Erin Stevenson from Zachary High School.

 

Hubie Owen presented certificates to winners of the 2006 High School Craft Olympics welding competition in which ZHS placed first in the state.  Winners are Justin Smiles, Corey Swick, Nathan Boone, Will McKowen, Jesse Graves and Ben Zachary.

 

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Mr. Drake reported that the last day of school for students will be Tuesday, May 23 and that the School Board office will begin their summer hours June 12 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

The Zachary High School Band placed first out of 15 in the Superior Sweepstakes competition held in New Orleans.  This is the second time in ZHS history that they have received this honor and the last time was in 1969.

 

PERSONNEL CHANGES

Mr. Drake requested approval for personnel changes on the attached list.  Mr. Benda moved to approve Personnel Changes and Mrs. Coleman seconded the motion.

ELECTION RETURNS RESOLUTION

Mr. Robertson asked for approval of the April 29, 2006 Bond Election.  Mrs. Coleman moved to     approve the result of the special election held in the ZCSB No. 1, State of Louisiana, on Saturday, April 29, 2006 to authorize the incurring of debt and issuance of bonds therein and Mr. Swilley seconded the motion.

ENGAGEMENT OF AUDIT FIRM

Mr. Benda moved to engage Postelwaite and Netterville to conduct the annual audit and Mrs. Young seconded the motion.

VOTE: 9 YEAS  0 NAYS

 

RATIFY PROPERTY PURCHASE

Mr. Swilley moved to ratify the purchase of property at 4128 Ada Street, Zachary at a cost of $59,000 on April 28, 2006 and Mrs. Horton seconded the motion.

VOTE: 9 YEAS  0 NAYS

 

DECLARE HOUSE AS SURPLUS

Mr. Swilley moved to declare the house on the property at 4128 Ada Street, Zachary as surplus with the intent to sell such house and Mrs. Coleman seconded the motion. 

VOTE:  9 YEAS  0 NAYS

 

RATIFY LEASE AGREEMENT WITH ZACHARY MEN’S CLUB

Mrs. Young moved to ratify the lease agreement with Zachary Men’s Club to use as NWM recreational area and Mr. Swilley seconded the motion. 

VOTE:  9 YEAS  0 NAYS

 

COMMITTEE MEETINGS

The Athletic Committee will meet Tuesday, May 16 at 3:30 p.m. in Coach Howell’s office at ZHS.   Facility Committee will set a meeting in the next week.
