ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

MARCH 26, 2009

 

The regular meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on March 26, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mr. Kelley.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance by Mrs. Young.

 

ROLL:  Mr. Swilley, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Samuel, Mr. Snowden, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Kelley, Mr. Benda and Mr. Dayton

 

PUBLIC COMMENT:  There was none

 

MINUTES FOR FEBRUARY 26, 2009

Mrs. Young moved to approve the minutes for February 26, 2009 and Mrs. Rogers seconded the motion.

VOTE:  9 YEAS   0 NAYS   0 ABSENT

 

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT 

Mr. Drake reported that Carol Price was selected for the 2009 La. Mathematics Fellows Advisory Panel. Spring Testing for LEAP, iLEAP, GEEX and LAA2 begins Wednesday, April 1, through April 8, 2009.  Zachary Elementary School had a Miniature Ecosystems for 2nd and 3rd grade gifted and talented students led by teachers Breigh Rainey and Kristy Scott.  Breigh Rainey received the Council on Elementary Science International’s Muriel Green Elementary Science Teaching Award on Saturday, March 21, 2009 during the National Science Teachers Association conference in New Orleans.  The annual plant sale will be a Zachary High School starting Wednesday, April 1 through Saturday, April 4, 2009.

 

RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS

The board recognized Jasmine Haynes as the First Place winner of the Statewide Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest Winner.  She will represent Louisiana at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for the national finals on April 28th. 

 

Louisiana School Board Association Art Contest Winners:

 

Jennifer Boyd - Zachary High School 2nd Place Winner

Honorable Mention Winners:  Alyse Holliday - Copper Mill Elementary 5th grade and Darryl Edwards, Jr. Zachary Elementary 3rd grade.

 

The students’ artwork was on display during the Louisiana School Board Association Conference this month and will remain on display at the LSBA office for the remainder of the year.

 

The board recognized the following students for winning the Tickfaw Fourth Annual Art Contest: 

 

Northwestern Elementary School:

1st. Place: Janae D’Arensbourg - Kindergarten

2nd Place: Kaitlyn Meir - Kindergarten

3rd Place: Katy Knecht - Kindergarten

Zachary Elementary School:

2nd Place: Camryn Hayes 3rd grade

 

Copper Mill Elementary:

1st. Place: Kyla D’Arensbourg 4th Grade

1st Place: Ashley Moreau 5th Grade

2nd Place : Tori Guidry 5th Grade

3rd Place: Kyle Durbin 5th Grade

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

Mrs. Young moved to approve Personnel Matters and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

DEMOGRAPHER UPDATE

Charles M. Tolbert, Ph.D , gave the demographer update.

 

PORT HUDSON CAREER ACADEMY

Mr. Kelley moved to approve the Port Hudson Career Academy on Flanacher Road and Mr. Benda seconded the motion.

VOTE:  9 YEAS   0 NAYS   0 ABSENT

 

BUDGET FOR EARLY LEARNING CENTER AT ROLLINS ROAD

Mrs. Samuel moved to approve the budget of $6.8 Million for the Early Learning Center at Rollins Road and Mr. Snowden seconded the motion.

VOTE:  9 YEAS   0 NAYS    0 ABSENT

 

BUDGET FOR ROLLINS ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE

Mr. Snowden moved to approve the budget of $1.4 Million for Rollins Road Infrastructure and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

VOTE:  9 YEAS   0 NAYS   0 ABSENT

 

BUDGET FOR ZACHARY HIGH SCHOOL DRAINAGE

Mrs. Young moved to approve the budget of $800,000.00 for the Zachary High School Drainage and Mr. Snowden seconded the motion. 

VOTE:  9 YEAS   0 NAYS   0 ABSENT

 

FIRE ALARM SYSTEM FOR ZACHARY HIGH SCHOOL

Mr. Dayton moved to table the fire alarm system for Zachary High School and Mr. Benda seconded the motion.

VOTE:  9 YEAS   0 NAYS   0 ABSENT
