ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

AUGUST 13, 2009

 

The regular meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on August 13, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mrs. Young.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Dayton.

 

ROLL: Mr. Swilley, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Samuel, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Kelley, Mr. Benda and Mr. Dayton.         ABSENT:  Mr. Snowden

 

PUBLIC COMMENT - There was none.

 

MINUTES FOR JULY 23, 2009

Mrs. Samuel moved to approve the minutes for July 23, 2009 and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

VOTE:  8 YEAS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT

 

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Mr. Drake reported that the Zachary Community School System is in its seventh year.  Students are back in school and the first day went very well.  Transportation and Food Service is going smoothly.  We now have a total of 4,965 students. We have a total of 971 students at Northwestern Elementary, 743 at Zachary Elementary, 763 at Copper Mill Elementary, 1,123 at Northwestern Middle and 1,330 at Zachary High School.  Mr. Drake announced that he has some tentative dates for ribbon cuttings and ground breakings.  Copper Mill ribbon cutting will be on 8-26-09 at 10:30 a.m., Port Hudson Career Academy ribbon cutting will be on 9-3-09 at 6:00 p.m., Zachary High School Gym ground breaking will be on 9-23-09 at 10:00 a.m. and Early Learning Center at 11:00 a.m. Northwestern Middle School ribbon cutting for Gym and Theater will be on 10-1-09 at 6:00 p.m.

 

POINT OF ORDER

MINUTES FOR AUGUST 3, 2009

Mr. Swilley told the board that we need to also approve the minutes for August 3, 2009.

Mrs. Young moved to approve the minutes for August 3, 2009 and Mrs. Rogers seconded the motion.  VOTE:  8 YEAS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT

 

RECOGNITION OF ZACHARY ELEMENTARY TEACHER, BRIEGH RAINEY

Mr. Drake told the board that Ms. Breigh Rainey was awarded the Council on Elementary Science International’s Muriel Green Elementary Science Teaching Award.  She was selected as a participant in the Mickelson Exxon Mobil Teachers Academy in New Jersey.  Mrs. Rainey will present an overview of her science program which is the reason she was selected from hundreds of other applicants for her recent awards as well as her experiences as a result of achieving them.

 

Mr. Drake recognized Mr. Greg Barbie.  Mr. Barbie is an Exxon employee and a Volunteer and has provided the district with valuable information regarding Exxon Grants of which many teachers have used to secure funds from Exxon.  He provided information which led to the opportunity for Ms. Briegh Rainey to be nominated for the Mickelson Exxon Mobil Teachers Academy in New Jersey.

 

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

Mr. Drake told the board that Dwayne Chatelain from Zachary High School was the summer school program administrator.  He also emailed each of the summer school teachers with the test results for their students.  Mr. Drake thanked Mr. Chatelain for his strong commitment to excellence and presented him with a certificate.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

Mr. Benda moved to approve the Personnel Matters and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

VOTE:  8 YEAS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT

 

LAND ACQUISITION

Mrs. Samuel moved to approve the succession of George Brown on Lot 2, Block B, at 5017 Rollins Road, Zachary, La. for $85,800.00 and Mr. Kelley seconded the motion.

VOTE:  8 YEAS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT

 

ARCHITECT FOR 9th GRADE ACADEMY

Mr. Kelley moved to approve Bani, Carville and Brown as the Architect for the 9th Grade Academy and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

VOTE:  8 YEAS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT

 

COMMITTEE MEETINGS

Building Facilities will meet on first Tuesday of each month prior to Thursdays’ board meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Zachary High School Academic Center.

Executive Committee meeting to be announced.
