ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

SEPTEMBER 10, 2009

 

The regular meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on September 10, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. at 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mr. Dayton.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Kelley.

 

ROLL:  Mr. Swilley, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Samuel, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Kelley, Mr. Benda and Mr. Dayton.    ABSENT:  Mr. Snowden

 

PUBLIC COMMENT - There was none.

 

MINUTES FOR AUGUST 27, 2009

Mr. Dayton moved to approve the minutes for August 27, 2009 and Mrs. Samuel seconded the motion.

VOTE:     8 YEAS    0 NAYS     1 ABSENT

 

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Mr. Gordon Robertson, Business Manager, reported that Mr. Drake is out sick tonight.

 

Mr. Robertson reported that on September 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., ground breaking will take place for the Zachary High School Gym and at 11:00 a.m., ground breaking will be for the Early Learning Center.  On October 1, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. the ribbon cutting will take place for Northwestern Middle School Center for the Arts and 2nd Gym.  Mr. Robertson recognized Mrs. Gaynell Young on her retirement from AT&T on September 2, 2009.  Zachary High School football team will play St. Thomas Moore here tomorrow night.  Mr. Robertson announced that Ms. Monica Ford is doing a Internet Safety class over at Northwestern Middle School tonight.  Mr. Robertson told the board that Jamaree Thornton, 10th Grader at Zachary High School, has just received his Eagle Scout Badge.

 

The board presented Jamaree Thornton a certificate.  Also, his Scout Master, Mr. Paul Gathright came with Jamaree and told what all Jamaree did to earn his Eagle Badge.    

 

RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS

2009 John Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth - Eighth Graders.

Of over 50,000 testers, 12,000 qualified for High Honors; 14 in Louisiana; two in Zachary.

 

High Honors went to:  Justin Serrett - ACT 33 Reading Score.

 

The board presented Justin Serrett a certificate.

 

Mason Foote - ACT 29 Reading Score

On June, 2009, in Baltimore, Justin Serrett was joined by 125 of the most academically gifted seventh and eighth graders in the country identified through The John Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.  Justin was presented the International Mathematics and Verbal Talent Search Award for High Honors.  He was the only Louisiana middle school student to qualify for the grand ceremony in Louisiana.

 

Duke University 2009 - 7th Grade Talent Identification Program from (SAT/ACT)

Thirty Three students applied and were tested.

 

ACT - Total qualified for State and Grand Recognition was 1.  Benjamin Lane with a composite score of 24.

 

ACT- Total Qualified for State Recognition - 14

Kaylin Alleman, Kristina Bynum, Anthony Vicellio, Preston Danielson, Matthew Flanders, Kaitlin Maloy, James Gantz, Emily LeBlanc, Caleb Town, Amanda Martel, Maya Pelichetand Connor Usie.

 

SAT- Total qualified for State Recognition  was 1.  Hayley Hancock with a score of 520.

The students were unable to attend the board meeting but they will receive their certificates at school.

 

BEYOND THE ”r;CALL OF DUTY”

Mr. Robertson recognized Brenda Triche, Secretary at Northwestern Elementary, for all of the hard work that she does.  Mrs. Marthia Davis, Principal, told the board that Brenda is always ready to do anything to help out.  She will even open up the school on weekends for the teachers.  Brenda was presented a certificate.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

Mr. Benda moved to approve the Personnel Matters and Mrs. Samuel seconded the motion.      (See Attached List)

VOTE:    8 YEAS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT

 

POLICIES

Mrs. Young moved to approve File: JQE - Pregnant Students Policy and File: IFBGA - Student Computer Access and Use Policy and Mr. Owen seconded the motion.

VOTE:  8 YEAS   0 NAYS    1 ABSENT

 

COMPUTER REPLACEMENT AND RECYCLE

Mr. Joe Rush told the board that the Educational Committee has recently agreed upon guidelines for a replacement cycle for all of the Zachary Community School Board computers.  The Zachary School Board will enact a replacement cycle program that will call for replacement of computers every 4 years and a budget of $600,000 per year would need to be allocated in order to implement a computer replacement cycle in Zachary Community School District. As the District grows, the budget will grow accordingly.

 

Mr. Kelley moved to approve the Zachary Community School Board Computer Replacement and Recycle Program and Mr. Owen seconded the motion.
