ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

DECEMBER 10, 2009

 

The regular meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on December 10, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mrs. Samuel.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mrs. Rogers.

 

ROLL:  Mr. Swilley, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Samuel, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Benda and Mr. Dayton     2 Absent (Mr. Snowden and Mr. Kelley)

 

PUBLIC COMMENT – There was none.

 

MINUTES FOR NOVEMBER 12, 2009

 

Mr. Dayton moved to approve the minutes for November 12, 2009 and Mrs. Samuel seconded the motion.

 

VOTE:  7 YEAS   O NAYS    2 ABSENT

 

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

 

Mr. Drake reported that the groundbreaking for the new Zachary High School Performing Arts Center will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Each K class will perform a Christmas program at Northwestern Elementary School on December 8th through 10th at 9:15 a.m.  Zachary Elementary tonight is holding the ”r;Celebrating Louisiana’s Wetlands.”  World famous nature photographer C.C. Lockwood will join them for a special evening celebration in which 3rd grade students’ artwork will be displayed and auctioned.  Zachary High School Christmas Concert will be Friday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the band room.  The Zachary High School Swim team competed in the Division 1 LHSAA State Swim Meet in Sulphur on November 20th and 21st.  Zachary High School Senior, Joe Martin, signed a baseball scholarship to attend the University of Southern Mississippi.  Jessica Browne signed a softball scholarship with Southeastern University and Allison Kippers signed a golf scholarship with McNesse University.  Kelsei Lee of Port Hudson Career Academy and also a student with the Louisiana Technical College made a Reserved Parking sign for Scott Swilley, Board President.  Dr. Amanda L. Talbot volunteered her services to our Special Needs Children participating in the Special Olympics by providing their physicals.  Mrs. Mason presented a certificate and power point of our children that participated in the Special Olympics. 

 

CHRISTMAS CARD CONTEST WINNER

 

Mr. Drake reported that Kiersten Guy a 4th grade student at Copper Mill Elementary won the Christmas Card Contest.  The board presented Kiersten a framed original picture of the Christmas card.

 

BATON ROUGE ART SHOW WINNERS

 

The Downtown Kiwanis Annual Community Art Show took place on Saturday, November 7, 2009.  The annual art show features over 200 submitted works of art by 8 middle schools and 20 high schools in the Baton Rouge area.

Rachel Lamendola took First Place in the high school category as well as Best in Show; and Phil Douzat placed Second Place; and Hana Chang placed Fourth.  Kendell Knight, Krystal Ragland and Paige Tullier won several Honorable Mentions.

 

BEYOND THE ”r;CALL OF DUTY”

 

Mr. Drake recognized Nancy Forbes of Northwestern Elementary for the outstanding work that she does.  Also, Mr. Drake recognized Tammy Wood, District Coordinator of Special Programs, for all of the hard work that she does.               

 

CSRS UPDATE

 

Abby Brown of CSRS presented a Power Point presentation update on the construction projects that are currently going on in the district.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

 

Mr. Benda moved to approve Personnel Matters and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.  (See Attached)

2009 AUDIT

 

Mike Schexnayder of Postlethwaite & Netterville, Inc. went over the 2009 Annual Audit.  He told the board that the Zachary Community School Board was in excellent financial and business shape.

 

CONSTRUCTION BUDGET FOR 9th GRADE ACADEMY

 

Mrs. Samuel moved to approve the total project budget for $10,330,274.10 for the 9th Grade Academy with the Construction Budget of $8.35 Million and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

 

VOTE:  7 YEAS    0 NAYS    2 ABSENT

 

SURPLUS PROPERTY

Mrs. Samuel moved to approve the bid on the Brown’s house on Rollins Road for $500.00 to Mr. Freddie Johnson with 60 days to move it and Mrs. Rogers seconded the motion. 

 

VOTE:     7 YEAS   0 NAYS   2 ABSENT

 

ELECTION OF SCHOOL BOARD OFFICERS

 

Mr. Benda moved to elect Hubie Owen as President and Mrs. Samuel seconded the motion.

 

VOTE:  7 YEAS    0 NAYS   2 ABSENT

 

Mr. Owen moved to elect Sharon Samuel as Vice President and Mrs. Dayton seconded the motion.

 

VOTE:  7 YEAS  0 NAYS  2 ABSENT
