ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

MARCH 11, 2010

 

The regular meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on March 11, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mr. Kelley.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Owen.

 

ROLL:  Mr. Owen, Mrs. Young, Mr. Swilley, Mrs. Samuel, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Kelley, Mr. Benda and Mr. Dayton.     1 ABSENT  ( Mr. Snowden)

 

MINUTES FOR FEBRUARY 25, 2010

Mrs. Young moved to approve the minutes for February 25, 2010, and Mr. Swilley seconded the motion.

There was no public comment.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Mr. Drake reported that we have guest, State Representative Tom McVea and State Representative Bodi White.  We wish our board attorney, Michael Platt, farewell as he leaves to work at a law firm in Baton Rouge.  Last Thursday, March 4, 2010, we attended and LA DOE Exiting Meeting where the committee indicated that we were in compliance with state and federal guidelines. The State Commodity Review found no findings in our Child Nutrition Program district wide.  Donna Grice and Michelle Vaughn will travel with Tammy Wood on Friday afternoon, March 12, 2010 to participate in the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches. This is their annual College Kickoff Weekend and the group will attend numerous workshops on how to prepare students for college.  Zachary High School is hosting a track meet.  School will be out for the Easter holidays beginning March 29 through April 5, 2010.  The twelve month employees will be off April 1, through April 5, 2010.  Testing:  LA Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) (ELA/M/SC/SS) will begin Phase 1 will be on March 23, and make-up will be on March 24 and 25, 2010.  Phase II will be on April 12 through April 16, 2010, and makeup will be April 19 through April 21, 2010.  Z-Fest will begin on Wednesday, March 24 through Saturday, March 27, 2010. 

 

RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS

The board recognized the DEMCO Youth Tour Essay Winners and Finalists.  Out of 300 entries in a 7 parish area, Zachary High School had 6 of the 12 finalist.  The two winners are Hannah Selbach and Blake Wesley.  The other 4 finalists are Brandi Ackoury, Chris Jackson;, Choloe’ Harrell and Chao Li.. The board presented them with a certificate.

 

The board recognized Tiffany George of Zachary High School as the fastest girl in the state.  She won the State Championship 55 Meter Dash at the Carl Maddox Field House at LSU.  The board presented her with a certificate.

The board recognized Brandi Ackoury of Zachary High School.  She plays clarinet at the high school and has been selected to go to Carnegie Hall this summer representing Zachary High School.   

 

RECOGNITION OF PTO FROM THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

The board recognized the PTO officers from each elementary school. They raised a total of $22,000.00 this school year.  Each person was presented a certificate.

Robin Evans - Event Chairperson; Amanda Ackman - Event Treasure Accountant; Renee Beadle - PTO President, Northwestern Elementary School, Tamara Armstrong - PTO President, Zachary Elementary School and Cindy Thompson - Copper Mill Elementary School, Family Fun Chairperson.

 

BEYOND THE “CALL OF DUTY”

The board recognized Charles Gibson of Copper Mill Elementary for the outstanding work that he does.  The board presented Mr. Gibson with a certificate.

 

The board recognized Debbie Usie of Northwestern Middle School for all of her many hours of planning and implementing numerous “Family Science Nights”, “Family Art Nights” and “Family Astronomy Nights.”  The board presented her with a certificate.

 

CSRS UPDATE

Russell Robelot of CSRS presented a Power Point presentation update on the construction projects that are currently going on in the district.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

Mrs. Samuel moved to approve Personnel Matters and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

SERVICE DRIVE AT ZACHARY HIGH SCHOOL

Mr. Swilley moved to approve the service drive at Zachary High School with a budget of $779,449.99 and Mr. Kelley seconded the motion.

POLICIES

Mr. Kelley moved to approve File: GBJ - Promotion; File: GBA - Contracts and Compensation; File: JDE - Expulsion; and table File: GAE - Complaints and Grievances and Mrs. Rogers seconded the motion.

Education Committee will meet on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 5:00 p.m., at the Zachary Community School Board Office.
