ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

JANUARY 13, 2011

 

The regular board meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on January 13, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at 3755 Church Street, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mrs. Samuel.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Kelley.

 

SWEARING IN SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS

 

Judge Lonny Myles swore in the School Board Members.

 

Gaynell Young – District 1; Scott Swilley – District 2; Sharon Samuel – District 3; Kenneth Mackie

District 4; Hubie Owen – District 5; Jannie Rogers – District 6; Carl Kelley – District 7; Donnie Dykes – District 8 and David Dayton – District 9.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM DECEMBER 16, 2010 SPECIAL BOARD MEETING

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve the minutes from December 16, 2010 Special Board Meeting and Mrs. Rogers seconded the motion.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

 

Mr. Drake reported that Northwestern Middle School Advanced Drama Department presents the Broadway musical, Annie, Jr. this week at Northwestern Middle School.  Zachary Elementary is having a Spelling Bee on January 11 and January 13, 2011.  The Zachary Bronco Baseball fifth annual Louisiana Army National Guard and The Dugout Club Auction on January 22, 2011 at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee will be celebrating the Annual Candlelight March on January 17, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at Zachary City Hall.  We will be having ELDA and LAA1 testing from February 14 – March 25, 2011.  March 22, 2011 will be LEAP/GEE Phase1 and April 11-14, 2011 will be iLEAP and Iowa.  On May 2 – 20, 2011 will be EOC Testing.  On Saturday, January 22, 2011 will be the Zachary Community Wellness Walk and Health Fair.  The walk starts at 8 a.m. at LeBlanc’s and ends at the ZHS Gym  On January 25-25, 2011 will be the LSBA School Governance Ethics Conference in Marksville.  

 

Mr. Scott Devillier told the board that Mougeot Architects is working on Northwestern Elementary School Kindergarten and Student Assessment and Support Services for Youth Center.  Bani, Carville and Brown are designing the new First and Second Grade, located on the 62 acres off of Rollins.  Bani, Carville and Brown are working on the Asbestos Abetment in the old gym and auditorium and the Cafeteria.

 

STUDENT SPACE FLIGHT EXPERIMENT PROGRAM – WINNING PROJECT PROPOSAL

 

CIRCE BRIDGES – COPPER MILL ELEMENTARY

 

The Fifth Grade class of Copper Mill Elementary was selected for the winning project for the United States Space Shuttle, the flight of Endeavour on STS-134 takes off in February 2011.  Various teams of students from around the district worked to design experiments to submit for review.  The project that was selected to fly aboard the shuttle is “What is the Effect of Microgravity on the Growth Rate of Murine Myoblasts?”  The students who were Co-Principal Investigators are:  Alexis Albert, Grace Dry, Madison Russell, and Leanne Sorrel.  Co-Investigators are Tyler Jackson and Jake O’Brien and facilitated by teacher Circe Bridges.

 

ELECTION OF SCHOOL BOARD OFFICERS

 

Mr. Owen opened the floor for nominations for School Board President

 

Mr. Kelley nominated to appoint Sharon Samuel as President and there was no other nominations and is a vote of acclimation.  Mrs. Sharon Samuel will be President.

 

Mr. Owen opened the floor for nominations for School Board Vice President.  Mrs. Young nominated Jannie Rogers as Vice President and there were no other nominations and is a vote of acclimation.  Mrs. Jannie Rogers will be Vice President.
