ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

February 24, 2011

 

The board meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on February 24, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at 3755 Church Street, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Donnie Dykes.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Scott Swilley.

 

ROLL CALL:  Mrs. Samuel, Mrs. Young, Mr. Swilley, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rogers,  and Mr. Dykes

MINUTES FROM FEBRUARY 10, 2011

 

Mrs. Rogers moved to approve the minutes from February 10, 2011 and Mrs. Young seconded the motion.

There was no public comment.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

 

Mr. Drake reported that Maegan LaBorde, will be presented with the National Science Teacher Association’s (NSTA) Muriel Green Award, which awards an outstanding young science teacher.

 

Blanca Deliberto won the Zula International-NSTA Early Science Educator.  Both of these outstanding young teachers will be honored at the upcoming National Conference, March 9-12.

 

They are both teachers at Zachary Elementary.  Kelsey Olson, 8th grader of Northwestern Middle School, is the Region 4 Middle School Student of the Year Nominee. The state selection committee will conduct the state students of the year event on March 2-3, 2011.  On March 3, 2011, the State Students of the year winners in Grades 5, 8, 12 and finalists will be honored at a reception in Baton Rouge. 

 

Curtis and Dwight Dawson, students at ZHS has accepted and signed Football Scholarships.  Zachary High School Baseball Team will play Neville High School on February 24, 2011 at 6:00 p.m.  You can watch it on the LIVE WEB BROADCAST presented by, Bayou Sports Network.  The board took a minute to listen to the game.

 

RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS

 

The board recognized the 2011 Louisiana School Boards Association Conference (LSBA) Artwork Contest Winners:  Julia Kinchen - 4th grade at Copper Mill Elementary School; First Place - Category K-4 and Natalie Dupuy - 10th grade; Zachary High School, Second Place - Category 9-12.  Their art will be on exhibit in the Crowne Plaza Hotel Atrium in Baton Rouge on March 2nd and 3rd during the 2011 LSBA Convention.  The LSBA will honor all First Place winners by having their art framed and on display in their office for one year.

 

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

 

The board recognized Monica Meeker and Marlene Rami, from the Zachary Early Learning Center for Beyond the Call of Duty award.  Mr. Drake told the board that Monica and Marlene worked countless hours getting the Early Learning Center ready to open up.  The board presented them with a certificate.

 

DEPARTMENT UPDATE:  HELEN FOLKS, CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAM SUPERVISOR

 

Mrs. Folks told the board that the Food Service Department is running smoothly.  She presented a Power Point on the functions and goals of the Zachary Community School Board Food Service Department and said, "that her cafeteria managers are the best in the state."

 

MAINTENANCE MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION (revision)

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve the Maintenance Manager Job Description (revision) and Mr. Dykes seconded the motion.    (See Attached)

SETTING BUDGET AND PERMISSION TO BID

HIGH SCHOOL GYM, AUDITORIUM, AND MAINTENANCE BUILDING, DEMO AND ABATEMENT

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve the budget for $595,750.26 and permission to bid on the High School Gym, Auditorium, and Maintenance Building Demo and Abatement; budget for $400,000.00 and permission to bid on Northwestern Middle School Gym Renovation (Air Conditioner Bleachers); and budget for $1,537,000.00 and permission to bid for Northwestern Elementary School/Sassy Renovation and Mr. Mackie seconded the motion.  These budgets are coming from the $40M bond that was passed last year.

SURPLUS PROPERTY

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve the Zachary High School’s old Gym, Auditorium and Maintenance Building as surplus property and Mrs. Rogers seconded the motion.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
 

Mr. Swilley told the board that the Facilities Committee met on February 22, 2011, and will meet again on Tuesday, March 1st at 6:00 p.m.  Mr. Swilley said that the Facilities Committee needs to look at all the projects and work with the numbers carefully. (See Facilities Committee Notes Attached)

 

Mrs. Rogers told the board that the Athletic Committee met on February 16, 2011 and talked about the CECP coaches, football turf replacement funding and Zachary Youth Park contract. (See Athletic Committee Notes attached)
