MARCH 10, 2011

 

The board meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on March 10, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at 3755 Church Street. Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mr. Dayton.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mrs. Young.

MINUTES FORM FEBRUARY 24, 2011

 

Mrs. Young moved to approve the minutes from February 24, 2011, board meeting and Mr. Swilley seconded the motion.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

 

Mr. Drake reported that Jason Bowers, Choir Director at Zachary High School, was awarded the Baton Rouge Symphony 2011 Music Teacher of the Year.  The Zachary High School Choral Department competed in the District IV Choir Festival and all three groups received a sweepstakes of highest the possible rating from the judges.  Fourteen of the Zachary High School’s Band students were selected to take part in the All-District Honor Band.  Brandi Ackoury, Zachary High School Band Member, auditioned for the University of Southern Mississippi School of Music and was offered a scholarship.  Zachary High School French Teacher, Pamela Broussard and several Zachary High students attended the 31st annual Association Louisianaise de Clubs Francais des Ecoles Secondaires, (ALCFES) LA’s High School French Club Association. This years theme was Louisiana Revolution: "The Battle Continues." Ashleigh Jarrrel, of Zachary High School, received a scholarship to study at the University of Moncton in New Brunswick, Canada.  Matthew Stansbury, of Zachary High School, was elected ALCFES Convention President for2011-2012 State Officer Board.  He also won the Richard Guidry Scholarship to study at St. Anne’s University in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Treland Dunn, of Zachary High School, placed 1st in the Spelling Bee competition.  Leadership North held its first meeting today at the school board office.  Buddy Roemer was the guest speaker.

The board presented each student with a plaque, certificate and gift cards from area businesses.

 

DEPARTMENT UPDATE:  Dr. Michelle Clayton, Director of Academic Accountability and

Karin Lawless, Supervisor of Academic Accountability/Testing Coordinator

 

Dr. Michelle Clayton and Karin Lawless told the board that the Academic Accountability and Testing department is preparing for testing.  They presented a Power Point on the functions and goals of the Zachary Community School Board Academic Accountability/Testing Department.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve Travis Jarvis from Part Time Janitor to Full Time Janitor, effective March 14, 2011 and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

Mrs. Young moved to approve Elon (Buster) Smelley on his retirement, effective April 1, 2011, and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

EXTENSION OF BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL CONTRACT WITH CITY OF ZACHARY

 

Mr. Dayton moved to approve the Extension of the Baseball and Softball Contract with the City of Zachary through June 30, 2011, and Mrs. Rogers seconded the motion.

SETTING BUDGET AND PERMISSION TO BID FOR FIRST AND SECOND GRADE SCHOOL

 

Mr. Mackie moved to set the budget for $19 Million Dollars and Permission to Bid for the First and Second Grade School and Mr. Owen seconded the motion.  Mr. Swilley said that this project would have a $1.7 Million Dollars contingency.

CONSTURCTION MANAGER CONTACT

 

Mr. Swilley moved to table the Construction Manager Contract until March 24, 2011, Board Meeting and Mr. Dykes seconded the motion.
