MARCH 24, 2011

 

The board meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on March 24, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at 3755 Church Street, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mr. Mackie.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Dayton.

MINUTES FROM MARCH 10, 2011

 

Mrs. Young moved to approve the minutes from March 10, 2011, board meeting and Mr. Swilley seconded the motion.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

 

Mr. Drake reported that Alex Stephens has signed with Louisiana State University at Eunice for a Softball Scholarship.  Mary Margaret Turner has signed with Baton Rouge Community College for a Softball Scholarship.  The Zachary High School Graduation will be on Friday, May 20, 2011, at 6:30 p.m., at Bethany Church.  The Port Hudson Career Academy will have its graduation on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 6:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church.  Phase I testing was held on Tuesday, March 22nd and the Phase II testing will begin on April 11, 2011.  A Mandatory Pre-bid Meeting for Northwestern Elementary School will be on March 29, 2011, at 9:00 a.m., at the project site.  Bid opening will be on April 7, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Zachary Community School Board Training Room.  Mr. John Druskat, Human Resource Manager with Georgia Pacific will host other GP Human Resource Managers from around the country on April 7 - 8, 2011, at the Academic Athletic Center.  Monday through Wednesday, March 28 - 30, 2011, we will have several ZCSB Directors and Mr. Drake will attend the Equal Access to a Quality Education: The Civil Rights Issue of our Generation Conference in New Orleans.   The National School Board Association Convention will be in San Francisco on April 9th through April 11, 2011.  We have six board members who will be attending: Kenneth Mackie; Donnie Dykes; Gaynell Young; Scott Swilley; Jannie Rogers and Carl Kelley.  The Space Shuttle, Endeavour STS 134 is scheduled for its final voyage into space on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Cape Canaveral, Florida.  We will have students and teachers in attendance as well as Mr. Davis, Mrs. Young and Mr. Drake.  Easter Holidays will begin on April 22nd through April 29, 2011.  ZFest started on March 23, 2011 and will go through March 27, 2011.

The board presented each School Support Employee with a plaque and a certificate.

 

RECOGNITION OF ZACHARY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - EXEMPLARY READING AWARD FOR THE STATE

 

The board recognized Zachary Elementary School for receiving the Exemplary Reading Award for the State of Louisiana by the International Reading Association.  Brandi McNabb and Megan Noel made the presentation on behalf of Zachary Elementary.  The award will be presented at the National Conference this spring.

 

RECOGNITION OF TEACHERS

 

The board recognized Maegan LaBorde of Zachary Elementary, for receiving the National Science Teacher Association’s (NSTA) Muriel Green Award.

 

Blanca Deliberto of Zachary Elementary, won the Zula International - NSTA Early Science Educator Award.

 

The following teachers went to the National Science Teacher’s Associate Conference:

 

Aimee Davis, Blanca Deliberto, Darla Jines, Maegan LaBorde, Danye' Pelichet, Brei Rainey and Demetria Scott.

 

The following teachers have earned Travel Grants: Aimee Davis, Bianca Deliberto, Maegan LaBorde and Debbie Usie.

 

DEPARTMENT UPDATE - TIM JORDAN, SUPERVISOR OF SCHOOL AND HOME RELATIONS

 

Tim Jordan, Supervisor of School and Home Relations, told the board that his job duties are: Child Welfare and Attendance, School Admission, Hearing Officer, Positive Behavior Interventions, and Support and Disciplinary Referrals.  Mr. Jordan presented a Power Point.

 

CONSTRUCTION MANAGER CONTRACT

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve Donald W. Simpson as Construction Manager Contract for one year for $89,000.00 a year and Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.  (See Attached)

Mrs. Young reported that they had a Policy Committee Meeting today at 5:00 p.m. and will have more information at the next board meeting.
