ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

April 14, 2011

 

The board meeting of the Zachary Community School Board was held on April 14, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at 3755 Church Street, Zachary, La.

 

The invocation was led by Mr. Carl Kelley.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Hubie Owen.

 

ROLL CALL:  Mrs. Samuel, Mr. Swilley, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Kelley, and Mr. Dykes.

MINUTES FROM MARCH 24, 2011

 

Mrs. Rogers moved to approve the minutes from March 24, 2011, board meeting and Mr. Swilley seconded the motion.

There was no public comment.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

 

Mr. Drake reported that testing has been completed and make ups will start on April 15, 2011.

The students artwork that was selected for the State Superintendent’s Art Gallery are:

 

Julia Kinchen, 4th grader at Copper Mil Elementary School; Hanna Maggio , 7th Grader at Northwestern Middle School; and Rachel Lamendola, 11th grader at  Zachary High School.  Zachary Elementary School was awarded the International Reading Association for the state.  It is awarded by the International Reading Association annually to one school in each state.  Brandi McNabb and Megan Noel did the presenting for the school.  The launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour STS 134 has been rescheduled for Friday, April 29, 2011.  The Copper Mill Elementary Student Art Show will be on May 5, 2011, beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Byron Johnson of Zachary High School has signed a football scholarship with Millsap College.  The Zachary High School Choir will have Choir Recognition Concert on May 3, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Plains Presbyterian Church.  Mr. Drake announced that he has just received flags from the La. State Department of Education for the growth of three of our schools from last year.  Mr. Drake presented the flag of Exemplary Growth to Zachary High School, Principal Wes Watts and former Principal Scott Devillier.  Mr. Drake presented a flag to Northwestern Middle School, Principal Debbie Brian for Recognized Growth and to Copper Mill Elementary School, Principal Dewey Davis for Recognized Growth.  Mr. Drake told the board that on May 4, 2011, at 9:30 a.m., at Zachary Elementary they will open a twenty five year old time capsule.  Former Principal Ronnie Daniel will be there to assist.

 

RECOGNITION OF MISS ZACHARY - SHELBY CLAYTON

The board recognized Shelby Clayton, Senior at Zachary High School, for winning the title of Miss Zachary.  The board presented Shelby with a certificate.

 

RECOGNITION OF MISS ZFEST - DEANNE SEAMON

 

The board recognized Deanne Seamon, Junior at Zachary High School, for winning the title of Miss ZFest.  The board presented Deanne with a certificate.

 

RECOGNITION OF MISS EBRP FARM BUREAU QUEEN - MIKAYLA GERALD

 

The board recognized Mikayla Gerald, Senior at Zachary High School, for winning the title of East Baton Rouge Parish Farm Bureau Queen.  The board presented Mikayla with a certificate.

 

RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS:

 

Summer French Program:

 

Ashleigh Jarrell, Junior at Zachary High School, won a full scholarship at the French Convention in Lafayette to participate in the French Emersion Program in Moncton, New Brunswick this summer.

Each Student received a certificate by the board.

 

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

 

The board recognized Gary Smelley, from Zachary High School, for Beyond the Call of Duty.   Mr. Drake told the board that Gary works very hard at the high school and has been coming out on weekends getting things ready for the demolition of the old gym and auditorium.   he board presented him with a certificate.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS 

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve Personnel Matters and Mr. Kelley seconded the motion.  (See Attached)

LAWN MAINTENANCE CONTRACT

 

Mr. Swilley moved to approve the Lawn Maintenance Contract for $253,200.00, for 1 Year, with Angelo’s Lawn Company and Mr. Mackie seconded the motion.  (See Attached)

ACCEPT BID ON NORTHWESTERN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND SASSY

 

Mr. Swilley moved to accept the bid on Northwestern Elementary School and Sassy with Charles Carter Construction Company for a base bid of $839,900.00 with Alternate # 1 for $42,000.00 and Alternate # 2 for $14,800.00 and a Contingency of $89,670.00 and Mr. Mackie seconded the motion.  (See Attached)

ADVERTISING FOR FOOD SERVICE AND SUPPLY BIDS

 

Mr. Mackie moved to approve the advertising for Food Service and Supply Bids for 2011-2012 School Year and Mr. Dykes seconded the motion.
