ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

 

DECEMBER 8, 2011

 

The Zachary Community School Board Meeting was held on December 8, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at 3755 Church Street, Zachary, Louisiana.

The invocation was led by Kenneth Mackie.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Donnie Dykes.

 

ROLL CALL:  Mrs. Samuel, Mrs. Young, Mr. Swilley, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Kelley, Mr. Dykes and Mr. Dayton.

 

MINUTES FROM OCTOBER 13, 2011

Mrs. Young moved to approve the minutes from the November 10, 2011 meeting.  Mr. Mackie seconded the motion.

There was no public comment.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Mr. Drake reported that Copper Mill Elementary School students decorated Christmas ornaments for the 2011 National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C.  The students decorated 23 ornaments with the help of First Lady of Louisiana, Supriya Jindal, and Lafayette artist, Tony Bernard.  One of the ornaments will hang on the White House Christmas Tree, and the other ornaments will hang on the State’s Territory Tree in the President’s Park.  The students also made ornaments for the Governor’s Mansion Christmas Tree.  The Zachary High School Choir will hold its Candlelight Celebration Concert at the Plains Presbyterian Church on December 8, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.  Katie Browne, from Zachary High School, received a Softball Scholarship with the University of Georgia.  Bria Reed, from Zachary High School, received a Basketball Scholarship with the Nicholls State University.  In honor of the late John Herty, the Zachary High School Basketball Tournament has been renamed the 2011 John Herty Memorial Tournament.  The Zachary Community School District has been selected to be part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Women’s Initiative Program on January 25, 2011.  The Louisiana Department of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education, noted no findings for the Carl Perkins Program.  The Zachary Community School District will be off for Christmas and New Year’s starting on December 21, 2011 through January 3, 2012.  The students will return on January 6, 2012. 

 

CHRISTMAS CARD CONTEST WINNER

Mr. Drake introduced Brenton Hall, a kindergarten student at Northwestern Elementary School, as the Christmas Card Contest Winner.  The board presented Brenton with a framed original picture of the Christmas card.

 

RECOGNITION OF THE BANK OF ZACHARY’S VETERANS DAY POSTER CONTEST WINNER

 

Mr. Drake introduced Calyn Knight, from the Photography Class at Zachary High School, as the Bank of Zachary’s Veterans Day Poster Contest Winner.  The board presented Calyn with a certificate.

 

RECOGNITION OF 6th GRADE SOFTBALL TEAM

Mr. Drake recognized the 6th Grade Softball Team with a 7-1 record.  The board presented each player with a certificate. The coaches are Candace and Stephen Schexnayder.

 

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

Mr. Drake recognized Shelia Harold for all the hard work that she is doing at the schools.  The board presented her with a certificate. 

 

PRESENTATION BY FIRST GRADE TEACHERS

The First Grade Teachers from Northwestern Elementary School presented a Power Point to the board on how they are teaching the first graders about energy in a fun way.  The First Grade Teachers are:  Leigh Ann Carlton; Sarah Gehling; Gwen Savario; Shannon Wall; and Heather Williams.  Each teacher received a certificate.

 

ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD DONATION TO ZACHARY FOOD PANTRY

The board presented Ms. Prejean, from the Zachary Food Pantry, with a check for $500.00.

Ms. Prejean thanked the board for the check and for all of the hard work that the schools do for the food pantry.

 

Donnie Dykes had to leave for work at 7:45 p.m.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

Mr. Swilley moved to approve Personnel Matters.  Mr. Owen seconded the motion.  (See Attached)

RECOGNITION OF BOARD MEMBERS CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS FOR 2011

Mrs. Samuel recognized the Zachary School Board Members Continuing Education Hours for 2011:  Sharon Samuel, total training hours 25; Gaynell Young, total training hours 32.5; Scott Swilley, total training hours 22; Kenneth Mackie, total training hours 38.5; Hubie Owen, total training hours 17; Jannie Rogers, total training hours 28.75; Carl Kelley, total training hours 23.75; Donnie Dykes, total training hours 28; David Dayton, total training hours 20.5.

 

Mr. Swilley moved to accept the 2011 Zachary School Board Members Continuing Education Hours.  Mr. Mackie seconded the motion.

ARCHITECT FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE COPPER MIL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ROOF

Mr. Swilley moved to approve Sean Johnson as the Architect for the replacement of the Copper Mill Elementary School roof.  Mr. Kelley seconded the motion.

FUND BALANCE RESERVE FOR CONSTRUCTION

Mr. Mackie moved to approve the Fund Balance Reserve from 1 Million Dollars to 5 Million Dollars for construction. Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.

RESOLUTION TO LSBA FOR ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY

Mrs. Young moved to approve the Resolution for Alternative School Accountability to be presented at the Louisiana School Board Association Conference, March 1 – 3, 2012.  Mr. Kelley seconded the motion.
