ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

MAY 24, 2012

 

The Zachary Community School Board Meeting was held on May 10, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at 3755 Church Street, Zachary, Louisiana.

 

The Invocation was led by Mr. Dayton.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Owen.

 

ROLL CALL:  Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Young, Mr. Swilley, Mrs. Samuel, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Owen, Mr. Dykes, and Mr. Dayton.   1 Absent (Mr. Kelley)

                

MINUTES FROM MAY 10, 2012

 

Mr. Mackie moved to approve the minutes from the May 10, 2012 meeting.  Mrs. Young  seconded the motion.

 

There was no public comment.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

 

Mr. Drake reported that Ada Street will be closed beginning Thursday, May 24, 2012.  The district hosted the Compass and Collaboration meeting Monday, May 21, 2012, for the SE Network.  The school board office and schools will be closed on Monday, May 28, for Memorial Day.  We will start our 4 day summer work week on June 4, 2012.

 

DISTRICT ACCOUNTABILITY RESULTS

 

Karin Lawless presented a Power Point showing that Zachary Community School System led the state with the highest percentage of fourth and eighth graders scoring on grade level in the recent high stakes LEAP tests.  Karin told the board that all grades did extremely well placing between first and third in state ratings.

 

RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS

 

Special Olympics Champions

 

The board recognized the following students that participated in the Special Olympics that took place in Hammond, Louisiana.

 

Troy LeBlanc – Zachary High; Ariana Minor – Zachary High; Jeren Franklin – Port Hudson; Kevone Washington – Northwestern Middle; and Grayson Bastedo – Zachary Elementary

 

The board presented certificates to the Special Olympics Coaches:  Debra Toney; Chauncey Moore; and Craig Castello.  The board presented certificates to each one.

 

ZHS State Weight Lifting Team Champions

 

The Zachary High School Weight Lifting Team won the State Championship for the third straight year in a row.  The board presented certificates to the following students:

 

Byron Stevens; Chris Taylor; Ty Simpson; Kevin Williams; Perri Prevost; Mariah Clayton; Timothy Drevecky; Melvin Jones; Tyler Wade; Larry Cage; Nick Maxey; Cole Escher; Roderick Johnson; Courtney McCauley and Bryanna Fields.

 

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

 

Mr. Drake told the board that he would like to recognize Marlene Rami, clerk from the Zachary Early Learning Center for all that she does helping everyone at the Early Learning Center.  The board presented Marlene with a certificate.

 

Mr. Drake told the board that he would like to recognize Robert Yellott, coach for the Zachary High School Weight Lifting Team, for all that he does to help his students.  The board presented Robert with a certificate.

 

PERSONNEL MATTERS

 

Mrs. Samuel moved to approve Personnel Matters.  Mr. Swilley seconded the motion.

RECOGNITION OF MICHELLE CLAYTON

 

The board recognized Michelle Clayton, Director of Academic Accountability, who is leaving the Zachary Community School District as of May 31, 2012.  Michelle will become the Executive Director of Achievement for the Recovery School District in Baton Rouge.  The board presented Michelle with a plaque.

 

ACCEPT ZHS DISHWASHER BID

 

Mr. Swilley moved to accept the Zachary High School dishwasher bid with Buckelew’s Hardware for $89,500.00.  Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.
