SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

First I want to thank the citizens of Zachary for their support of the schools with the passage of our property tax renewal to fund the schools’ general operating expenses. This is an important source of funding for our schools. Thanks again to the community for supporting the continued vision of excellence we have for Zachary schools.

The holiday season is in full swing in our schools. We have had choir performances and concerts at many of our schools over the last few days. Zachary Elementary held a Christmas luncheon for parents of third grade students today. Tonight we will recognize our Christmas card contest winner Elyxcus Anaya a senior at Zachary High. It’s hard to believe but we are coming up on the close of the first semester. The middle and high school will have exams next week and we will have early dismissal in all of our schools beginning on next Wednesday.

Our special Olympians are continuing to shine in their events. The Capital Area Bowling event was held a few weeks ago and our students dominated. They took home seven 1st place awards , six 2nd place awards, five 3rd place awards, two 4th place awards and 2 students earned 5th place. We will honor our Special Olympians at an upcoming board meeting.

I also want to congratulate Mrs. Aeneid Mason and her staff on being selected as grant recipients in the Louisiana Believe and Include grant that provides funding to schools to develop innovative programs to increase academic performance for students with disabilities and prepare students with disabilities in inclusive setting.

Copper Mill Elementary is continuing to host LEAP parent meetings to prepare our families for testing time when we return from the holidays.

We have been conducting academic audits and teacher focus groups in all of our schools and we will continue seeing every core content teacher in the district. This has really given me an opportunity to visit with teachers and students and see the great things happening in our classrooms. I’m very pleased with the quality of instruction taking place and the teacher feedback is helping shape our plans for getting better in every area.

Zachary High will host fall athletic awards on Monday evening.

Tonight is Family Movie Night at ZELC. The students had pajama day today and they are watching a movie and enjoying a family evening in the school library as we speak.

Zachary Elementary held their annual spelling bee this week. We will recognize the winners at our January school board meeting.

The Journey to College and Career program hosted an informational meeting for parents this week about the district’s first summer college tour. We are excited about the opportunity to expose our students to opportunities which may be available in different colleges and universities.

Friday, Port Hudson Career Academy will be hosting the Community Provider Workshop. This is an outstanding program for the parents and students at Port Hudson. If you haven’t had a chance to go out and see this, it is something I encourage you to definitely try to make.

As you can see there is a lot going on in all of our schools. We’re proud of the work our teachers and students are doing every day. Our Christmas break will be December 24 through January 7 for students with teachers returning for an in-service day on January 7. I want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.
