ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

July 28, 2020

The Zachary Community School Board Special Meeting was held on July 28, 2020 at 6:00pm, at the ZHS Visual & Performing Art Center, 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, Louisiana.

ROLL CALL: Mrs. Westmoreland, Mrs. Young, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Owen, Dr. Lathon, Mrs. Kimmell, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Dayton. -  Mrs. Young and Mrs. Kimmell by teleconference.

REOPENING OF SCHOOLS PLAN

Mr. Devillier told the board that we have 2500-2600 students that have signed up for Virtual so far. We have sent out surveys to the staff.  Out of 443 educator surveys 55 would retire/resign if we go back full time, 37 if we would do hybrid and 7 if we do full virtual.  Mrs. Williams told the board that the district is trying to hire additional teachers right now.  We are working on getting high risk teachers into virtual positions.  Food service and janitorial may be an issue on finding replacements. Not a lot of applicants to fill those positions and substitute teachers we need also.

The plan is to put out information this week to parents and to have virtual orientation for virtual students next week and a drive through pickup orientation for the hybrid students.  Also, we will have a drive through pickup for virtual parents to pickup resources. 

As of right now the school district is allowing 100% virtual students to participate in extra curricular activities at the parent’s discretion.  Hybrid students can come to campus for activities on their home days as long as it is after school hours.

Public Comment:  15 people had comments on the Reopening of Schools Plan. (See Attached)

Mr. Dayton made motion to start on August 10, 2020 with transition model then on September 8, 2020 if in Phase 2, PreK – 6 would start school traditional and Grades 7-12 Hybrid.  Mrs. Westmoreland seconded the motion.

Mr. Mackie made a substitute motion to leave plan as original approve and we will revisit plan on September 1, 2020.  Mrs. Young seconded the motion.        

ROLL CALL VOTE:  Mrs. Westmoreland – Nay, Mrs. Young – Yea, Mr. Hughes – Yea, Mr. Mackie – Yea, Mr. Owen – Nay, Dr. Lathon – Yea, Mrs. Kimmell – Yea, Mrs. Watkins – Yea, Mr. Dayton – Nay. 

There was no public comment. 

VOTE:   6 YEA – 3 NAY – 0 ABSENT

Mr. Dayton moved to adjourn.  Mr. Owen seconded the motion.
