ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

August 6, 2020

The Zachary Community School Board Special Meeting was held on August 6, 2020 at 6:00pm, at the ZHS Visual & Performing Art Center, 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, Louisiana.

ROLL CALL: Mrs. Westmoreland, Mrs. Young, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Owen, Dr. Lathon, Mrs. Kimmell, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Dayton.   1 ABSENT – Mr. Hughes.

Mr. Walls presented the board an update on the safety measures that the schools have.  All schools have hand sanitizer, classroom safety posters, thermometers, water bottles, disinfectant spray, paper towels, floor clings, backpack sprayers and gloves.  Also, we have acrylic barriers in K and Pre K classrooms on tables where the children sit.  All personnel and students 3^rd graders on up are required to wear masks.

Mrs. Williams thanked the teachers for all their hard work since March.  We have had a lot of teacher training this summer and in July we have created a new data base.  We have lost a lot of teachers, paras, and bus aides, over the summer.  We still have four more teacher spots to be filled.    

Mr. Devillier reported that there are seven teachers that either tested positive or are suspected of having COVID-19 while the other 12 have been exposed to the virus by others.  They represent about 5% of Zachary Teaching corps of 390.  Many of the quarantined teachers will be able to work from home.

Mr. Devillier met with administrators and they all agreed that they would like to ask for a delay of the start of school so they have more time to prepare.  This is a very different school year and teachers just feel like they need more time.  He told the board that it is up to them if they would like to delay the start of school.

The board asked to take public comment before they would make a decision.

There was 18 Public Comments.   See Attached.

2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR START DATE

Mrs. Kimmell moved to approve the start date of the 2020-2021 school year to be August 17, 2020.  This will move school to start one week later.  Mrs. Watkins seconded the motion.

There was no public comment.

8 YAYS   0 NAYS   1 ABSENT - Mr. Hughes

2020-2021 SCHOOL CALENDAR   

Mrs. Young moved to approve the Revised 2020-2021 School Calendar.  Mr. Dayton seconded the motion.    See Attached.

Mr. Dayton moved to adjourn.  Mr. Owen seconded the motion.
