The Zachary Community School Board Special Meeting was held on  November16,  2021 at 6:30 pm, at the School Board Office, 3755 Church Street, Zachary,La.

INVOCATION - Mr. Mackie

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - Mr. Mackie

ROLL CALL: Mr. Mackie, Mrs. Young,Mrs. Westmoreland, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Owen, Dr. Lathon, Mrs. Kimmell, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Dayton

ABSENT:0

Attorney, Bob Hammonds from Hammonds and Sills, asked the mom if she wanted to have a Private Hearing or a Public Hearing. Attorney Hammonds explained it could be covered in the news. The mom chose the Public Hearing format,that any proceedings covered will be in a Public Hearing.

Attorney Hammonds told the board that Mr. Burke will speak, the mom, Mrs. Reese will speak. He wanted the board to know that they have three choices to make: affirm,reverse or modify the decision that the Hearing Officer made.

After hearing from Mrs. Reese, Mr. Burke and the daughter, Jana Welch, the board asked questions.

Mr. Owen made a motion to Affirm the decision that the Hearing Officer, Mr. Burke made. Mr. Hughes seconded the motion.

Mrs. Young made a substitute motion to modify the decision to a long term suspension for 20 days which includes time served and to seek counseling at  the  school.  Mr. Devillier informed the board that Jana has already served 19 days she could be able to go back to school Thursday, November 18, 2021.Dr. Lathon seconded the motion.

There was no public comment.

POLICY - File:JOE EXPULSION

Mr. Deviller reviewed File: JDE - Expulsion Policy and told the board that if a parent wanted to appeal a hearing, a parent has five days after the decision to expel has been rendered, to submit a request to the School Board to review the findings. He received a request for an appeal on the 9th day. The board did not decide to make an exception or change the policy.

Mr. Dayton moved to adjourn. Mrs.Young seconded the motion.  There was no public comment.
